@tokyolittletraveler: This isn’t a different species of cedar. It’s a tree shaped by 600 years of human craftsmanship. 🌲 Deep in the mountains of Kyoto, generations of foresters created one of the world’s most extraordinary forestry techniques. Instead of growing a single trunk, they carefully train one cedar to produce dozens of perfectly straight trunks from a single base—creating what looks like a giant living bonsai. Even more incredible, only the upper trunks are harvested. The ancient base remains alive, continuously growing new generations of trees for centuries. Some Kitayama Daisugi are over 400 years old and are still producing timber today. This rare technique was developed to create flawless, knot-free cedar for traditional Japanese tea houses and sukiya architecture. A tree that isn’t just growing… It’s being passed down through time. ------------------------------------------------ 📍kyoto Japan #kyototrip #japanesearchitecture #Japaneseculture
