This is a block statue of Nemti-hotep, a royal steward who lived during the reign of Pharaoh Senusret III nearly 3,900 years ago. The compact shape was created by depicting him seated, his knees drawn against his chest, his body wrapped in a cloak. The broad, flat surfaces gave artists plenty of room for inscriptions containing his name, titles, prayers, and requests for offerings. Block statues were commonly placed in temples, allowing their owners to remain eternally present before the gods. Visitors could read the inscriptions and speak the person’s name, helping preserve their identity and memory after death.
