BOOK SPOILER!!….. She was the only one he was truly in love with. I believe that Joe has borderline personality disorder and as someone who’s diagnosed, you can tell by his character traits ESPECIALLY in the book. He was always obsessed way more with her than anyone else, and ever little detail reminded him of her. He was constantly angry at himself for thinking he ruined their relationship after any kind of mistake, big or small. Destroying things, thinking he was the worst person alive, and was completely fine when he figured out everything was okay. He did the most for her, and in the show when he was disassociating he was hallucinating her, not Candace, not Love, not Mary Anne, ( I don’t remember her name in the books ), not Kate, it was Beck, and he had more remorse for her than anyone else. In the book after he killed her, he was so devastated to the point that he couldn’t process her death. While he was burying her, the wedding at the top of the hill made him think of their future an the saddest thing I’ve ever experienced in any series was when he was still talking to her and asking what their wedding would be like and then it clicked that she wouldn’t respond and reality kicked in again.
