The Great Northern War (1700–1721) was a major conflict that reshaped power dynamics in Northern Europe. It pitted Sweden, then a dominant regional power under King Charles XII, against a coalition including Russia, Denmark‑Norway, Saxony, and the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth. Russia’s primary goal under Peter the Great was to secure access to the Baltic Sea and break Sweden’s control over the region, which had long restricted Russian trade and geopolitical influence. The war began with setbacks for the coalition. Denmark‑Norway withdrew early after a swift Swedish campaign, and in 1700, Russian forces suffered a crushing defeat at Narva, highlighting the need for military reform in Russia. Peter the Great responded by modernizing his army, streamlining artillery production, introducing new training methods, and expanding the officer corps. These reforms gradually turned the tide. From 1701 onward, Russian troops gained ground in Ingria and Livonia. Key victories included the capture of Nöteborg (renamed Shlisselburg) in 1702 and Nienschanz in 1703, enabling the founding of Saint Petersburg later that year. The city became a symbol of Russia’s new Baltic ambitions and a vital port. Over the following years, Russian forces took Dorpat (Tartu) and Narva, consolidating control over strategic territories. A turning point came in 1708–1709. Charles XII launched an ambitious invasion of Russia, aiming to decisively defeat Peter the Great. However, the Russian army employed a scorched‑earth strategy, depriving the Swedes of supplies. In 1708, Russian troops won at Lesnaya, weakening the Swedish vanguard. Then, in 1709, the Battle of Poltava delivered a decisive blow: the Swedish army was routed, and Charles XII fled to the Ottoman Empire. This defeat marked the end of Sweden’s status as a great power and shifted momentum firmly to Russia and its allies. After Poltava, Russian operations expanded. Russian armies advanced into Finland and secured victories at sea, notably at Gangut in 1714—the first major triumph of the newly built Russian Navy. Naval engagements and amphibious raids weakened Swedish coastal defenses and disrupted trade. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts and shifting alliances further isolated Sweden. The conflict dragged on until 1721, when the Treaty of Nystad formally ended the war. Under its terms, Russia gained territories including Ingria, Karelia, Livonia, and Estonia, securing a broad Baltic coastline. Sweden retained parts of Pomerania and some northern lands but lost its dominant position in the region. For Russia, the victory was transformative: it gained a permanent foothold on the Baltic, established Saint Petersburg as a capital city, and emerged as a major European power. The war cemented Peter the Great’s legacy as a reformer and strategist, while Sweden’s decline opened new opportunities for other states in Northern and Central Europe. The Great Northern War thus stands as a pivotal event that realigned the balance of power and accelerated Russia’s integration into European politics. #fyp #russia #sweden #edit #History
