Fun fact, Swedish has different letters because Gustav Vasa wanted to translate the Bible to Swedish, but there wasn’t a written Swedish yet, and since Sweden had just escaped danish control, they didn’t wanna use the danish and Norwegian letters, so they created three new letters out of spite for the Danes

As a Finn, whose 3rd language is finnishsweadish, it's absolutely wild to listen to my danish friends speak and understand maybe 10% but then pick up their danish engineering book and all of a sudden I understand 70% of the written technical language 😳

I tried my luck learning Danish for travel purposes. Should be easy from a German, it’s a Germanic language after all, right? WRONG! Reading and writing are manageable, but listening comprehension and speaking; oh boy! Danish sounds like someone having a potato stuck in the throat trying to regurgitate it while speaking 😂

as a Dutchie I understood that whole yiddish sentence. also in the Netherlands we also have more vowels than there are letters in the Roman alphabet so we put some of those together to use for those sounds. Instead of using a cool new letter/symbol like ø or something, what a missed opportunity! we use boring existing letters: oe, ui, eu, au, ou, ei, ij, ie

I am Norwegian and have no problem with spoken Danish.Swedish is very easy to understand even Skåne😂as for Icelandic i have to ‘’adjust’’ my ears a little more, Faraoese is a lot easier. Then we have Finnish where i can just give up😂

Fun fact: Norwegian is technically more closely related to Icelandic than to Swedish and Danish. It's the Western Scandinavian branch (NO, IS) vs the Eastern Scandinavian (SE, DK). One of the ways you can tell is that Norwegian and Icelandic have three grammatical genders vs two in Swedish and Danish. Also diphthongs, which Swedish and Danish don't have.
