At 22, Alexandra Elbakyan built Sci-Hub, a controversial shadow library that changed how millions of people access scientific research. What started in 2011 as a way around expensive journal paywalls grew into one of the largest archives of academic papers online. Sci-Hub has been called a pirate library because it gives free access to paywalled papers, often without publisher permission. A 2018 eLife study found that Sci-Hub covered 85.1% of toll access journal articles at the time, showing how massive its reach had already become. Now the story has entered the AI era. Sci-Hub has reportedly launched Sci-Bot, an experimental AI research assistant that can answer questions using papers from its archive, though early reports say it still has limits with newer research and deeper follow-up questions. Publishers see Sci-Hub as copyright infringement, and Elsevier previously won a major damages case against the site. Supporters see it as a rebellion against a system where scientific knowledge is often locked behind expensive paywalls.
