@dixon.white: There is a terrifying trick that time plays on all of us. We spend our entire youth building our lives, completely convinced that tomorrow is infinite, assuming the people sitting across the table will just always be there. At 59, I’m starting to feel the edge of that shadow. I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting lately on how we treat the elders in our society, and honestly, it breaks my heart. We tend to stash them away like broken furniture. My wife saw it firsthand when she worked in a nursing home—the crushing isolation of human beings who survived wars, profound heartbreaks, and eras we can’t even fathom, just left behind in the dark. Recently, I went through a personal loss that forced me to look at a really uncomfortable truth. It made me realize the stark, heartbreaking difference between how we handle the end of life for the pets we love, versus the very men and women who wiped our tears and gave us our lives. Those deep lines on their faces aren't signs of decay. They are intricate maps to a world we are about to inherit. They are living libraries. If you are lucky enough to still have an elder in your life, I need you to do something for me. Watch this video to the end, and then take the one simple step I’m asking of you. Do it today. Don't wait until the clock runs out, because one day, what I'm asking you to capture will be the absolute most valuable thing you own. #perspective #agingwithdignity #familyhistory #LifeAdvice #storytelling

I live my self at 82 and dont see either of children who are grown adults. I don’t get calls . I’m in their way and they are just waiting until my time comes for me die. I have so much love but because I need help to see that I don’t fall . Just in the home with . It gets very lonely.

This is so true. Until our mother took her last breath we made sure one of her 4 children was with at her side while in the hospital everyday and almost every hr. My sister and I gave her her final earthly bath, put clean clothes on her and changed her bed sheets. I wouldn’t change anything I did her last month on earth.

Beautiful!!! I will keep these words near and dear to my heart.❤️Your words of compassion and true connectedness really touched my soul!!! I am 61 and sometimes see myself in what you are saying. I am often reminded that one day, not having had any children of my own, I might be the very person you are referring to. I pray that when that time comes someone shows me mercy, respect and compassion. I that I am not alone.

I’m only 52 and I’ve lost everyone except my 21 year old son. All of my family is gone and many of my friends. It’s devastating.

As sentimental as this is it is much more complicated than the next generation simply not caring.

I think the culture of America is to leave the elders behind. They’re not valued like some cultures.

I want not to give anything. I took care of my mom until she left us. I lost my best friend. Still talk with her and love is still deep. I want to give up but something keeps me from it.
