@dr.matthew.parker: Today’s historical psychiatric treatment: Metrazol convulsive therapy. This was the precursor to ECT. Around the 1930s, psychiatrist were developing the idea that inducing a seizure could improve psychiatric illness. Instead of using electricity, they introduced a drug called Metrazol. The seizure occurred within seconds. Sounds simple, right? There was an issue—ptatients who underwent the procedure experienced violent seizures, sometimes leading to fractures. Overall, this treatment was ineffective, but it eventually led to the development of ECT, which remains one of the safest, most effective and data-driven procedures in psychiatry.
