What does it actually mean to be a עִבְרִי — an Ivri, a Hebrew? 👇 Long before we were called Jews, we were called Ivrim. And that word isn’t random — it comes from the root עבר, la’avor (לַעֲבֹר), “to cross over.” The first person in the Torah ever called this is Avraham — אַבְרָהָם הָעִבְרִי, Avraham the Hebrew (Bereishit 14:13). Not because of his beliefs. Because of his direction. He crossed the Euphrates. He left everything familiar — his father’s house, his father’s gods, his father’s land — and went toward a place he’d only been promised, not shown. That’s not just biography. That’s the blueprint. Generations later, it’s the Israelites — also called Ivrim, Hebrews — who cross the sea out of Egypt, cross the wilderness, and finally cross the Jordan into the Promised Land. Every major threshold in our story is a crossing. So to be an Ivri was never simply an ethnic label. It was a spiritual posture. An Ivri is someone who lives on the עֵבֶר — the “other side” — willing to stand apart from where everyone else is standing, and willing to move when movement is called for. Not crossing for its own sake, but crossing toward something sacred. We are, at our root, a people of the sacred crossing. Not comfortable staying put when holiness calls us forward.
