Chief Michael Okpala popularly known as 'Power Mike' was a wrestler who dominated the wrestling arena during the early 1970s. He was a household name in the world of wrestling and retired as an undefeated World Heavyweight wrestling champion. His name was synonymous with Power hence the nickname, Power Mike He hailed from Neni in Anaocha LGA, Anambra State and attended Anglican Primary School, Adazi-Enu where he started building his sports career by being active and getting involved in sporting events. He became interested in boxing and became an amateur boxer. After his primary education in 1952, he left for Onitsha, to learn trade and in the process, he joined the Dick Tiger Boxing Club as a middle weight amateur boxer and Dick Tiger became his role model. He left Onitsha for Kano Where he started a superman show business which gave him a lot of fame locally. His exhibitions in Kano had his audience spell bound as people from various backgrounds were longing to see him perform. His Showmanship took him around the world in the mid-1950s. His acts included using his bare hands to bend a six-inch nail, lifting four heavy men with ease, engaging several men in a game of tug-of-war, using bare hands to break a coconut and so on. He later went on to become a wrestler and defeated Ali Baba of Lebanon, Johnny Kwango, Power Jack, Joseph Kovacs, Judd Harris, John Tiger of Canada and a host of other notable worldwide superstars. He was also a promoter as his Power Mike International Promotions brought about foreign wrestlers like Mil Mascaras, Dick the 'Bulldog Brower', Buddy Rose, Michael Hayes, Mighty Igor, The Mongols, Carlos Colon, Chris Adams. He was a member of The Prestigious People's Club of Nigeria and the Legendary musician, Okonkwo Asah (seven seven) paid tribute to him in one of his songs titled Power Mike. He retired from active wrestling in 1976 and died on 11 March 2004 at the National Hospital, Abuja after a protracted illness. A statue was erected in his honour in his hometown, Neni.
