Flock cameras perform 20 billion license plate scans per month. Already, these cameras are in more than 5,000 communities around the country, and they have indexed almost four and a half million unique license plates. The data they generate is compelling. Not only has it been used to solve more than 700,000 crimes, including 23 homicides and kidnappings, but it's also compelling to police officers. So far, there have been charges against 18 police officers who have used this data to track, stalk, and harass people for their personal reasons. The erosion of our privacy has been so gradual that it's almost hard to feel how far we've come. Today, for example, Agencies across the U.S. government have openly stated that they would rather buy personally identifiable data about us from third-party vendors who typically sell that data to help corporations target us with ads rather than go through the headache of obtaining a warrant. But there is a reason that they would have to obtain a warrant, and that is the Fourth Amendment, which guarantees our right to privacy. Government agencies have argued that if corporations can buy this data, they should be able to buy it too. But there's a key difference between a corporation and a government, and that's that the government has a monopoly on the legitimate use of violence. Corporations do not have that. Have we reached some tipping point in surveillance and privacy erosion? Would we prefer to have more crimes solved or more liberty? #politics #police #news #flock
