I got into a heated argument with my 8th grade science teacher that the Death Valley was below sea level. This was pre internet days, btw. He belittled me and called me stupid for believing anything below sea level wasn’t underwater. The apology I got came with a free lunch the next day. He was named principal the next year.

That Maori in the great migration were half starved and lost at sea and eventually accidentally crashed into New Zealand, as opposed to discovering it even that historic evidence proves that they were in fact skilled navigators and that they were quite accustomed to traveling all over the Pacific ocean and further afield.
