Goldeneye was an attempt at revitalizing a franchise that over the past decade had grown stale and waned considerably in popularity. Part of creating a new James Bond for the 1990’s was creating a new wardrobe, and part of creating a new wardrobe was choosing a new watch. It was Goldeneye where the legendary brand partnership between James Bond and Omega began, one which continues to this day. This is a topic that’s been discussed to death among watch writers and content-creators to such an extent I’ve almost felt compelled to avoid the subject entirely. I do think, however, looking back at this film provides us a glimpse into a particularly interesting transition in the way people perceive watches. The Omega Seamaster Diver 300 M came at a time when digital was still king. The Seamaster is a heavy-duty and highly accurate diving accompaniment, but it wasn’t really advertised as such— nor was it advertised as high-end luxury. It occupied a new middle-ground of watches that were advertised for their excitement value; they were nostalgic, and harkened to a kind of old-school style of adventure and exploration that, perhaps, digital watches didn’t quite evoke for people.
