W edit ? Algeria's history has been shaped by its position between the Mediterranean, the Maghreb, and the Sahara. While much of its political life developed along the northern coastal plains, the region's deeper foundations lie in indigenous Amazigh societies, including the Numidians, who formed one of the earliest known states in the area. Over time, Algeria came into contact with Phoenician, Roman, Vandal, and Byzantine powers, each leaving traces on its historical landscape. The spread of Islam from the 7th century, followed by Arab migrations, gradually reshaped the region's culture, language, and religious identity, producing an Algerian identity rooted in both Arab-Islamic and Amazigh heritage. After the weakening of Umayyad authority following the Berber Revolt of 740, Algeria was ruled by several local Islamic dynasties, including the Rustamids, Fatimids, Zirids, Hammadids, Almohads, and Zayyanids. In the Ottoman era, the Regency of Algiers rose as a powerful and largely self-governing state in the western Mediterranean, maintaining only nominal allegiance to the Ottoman Empire. France invaded Algeria in 1830, annexed it in 1848, and extended control over the territory only after decades of resistance. In modern times, Algeria's history has been especially marked by the War of Independence and the Civil War of the 1990s. Numidia (Berber: Inumiden; 202–40 BC) was the ancient kingdom of the Numidians located in northwest Africa, initially comprising the territory that now makes up modern-day Algeria, but later expanding across what is today known as Tunisia, Libya, and some parts of Morocco. The polity was originally divided between the Massylii in the east and the Masaesyli in the west. During the Second Punic War (218–201 BC), Masinissa, king of the Massylii, defeated Syphax of the Masaesyli to unify Numidia into one kingdom. The kingdom began as a sovereign state and later alternated between being a Roman province and a Roman client state. Numidia, at its largest extent, was bordered by Mauretania to the west, at the Moulouya River,[2] Africa to the east (also exercising control over Tripolitania), the Mediterranean Sea to the north, and the Sahara to the south. It was one of the first major states in the history of Algeria and the Berbers. The Regency of Algiers[c] (Arabic: دولة الجزائر, romanized: Dawlat al-Jaza'ir[d]) was a state in North Africa lasting from 1516 to 1830, until it was conquered by the French. Situated between the regency of Tunis in the east, the Sultanate of Morocco (from 1553) in the west and Tuat[187][188] as well as the country south of In Salah[189] in the south (and the Spanish and Portuguese possessions of North Africa), the Regency originally extended its borders from La Calle in the east to Trara in the west and from Algiers to Biskra,[190] and afterwards spread to the present eastern and western borders of Algeria.[191] It had various degrees of autonomy throughout its existence, in some cases reaching complete independence, recognized even by the Ottoman sultan.[192] The country was initially governed by governors appointed by the Ottoman sultan (1518–1659), rulers appointed by the Odjak of Algiers (1659–1710), and then Deys elected by the Divan of Algiers from (1710-1830). #algeria #🇩🇿 #dz #الجزائر #History 🇩🇿
