For the 2025 civil service exam, 937,876 applied for 979 places and 576,793 sat. 958 were recommended: one in 602 of those who appeared. Harvard admits about one in 24. The same system decides who may study medicine. On May 3, 2026, 2.27 million candidates sat the medical entrance exam for about 137,000 places, more than half of them private. Investigators found material circulated beforehand that matched up to 120 of 180 questions. The testing agency cancelled the results on May 12. A retest followed 40 days later. The Indian Express counted at least 12 aspirants who died by suicide in between. Reuters found at least 24 exams since 2014 invalidated after leaks.
