I call this meeting of the Asian Dad Club to order! Okay, but in all seriousness, being mixed Asian with an Asian dad has so many layers, stereotypes, and false narratives that come with it. It is on us to grow this conversation at this point and address some of the gaps in the overall mixed experience. It’s all about creating what we needed that we didn’t have - the blueprints, resources, discourse, etc. Same with the wasian convo. Although I don’t identify that way, I think it’s important we still unpack our identities no matter how early on in that stage you might be. And that’s not only specific to mixed Asian and whyte folks AT ALL. We’re all in different stages and phases as a community. BUT, part of being in community and contributing to its growth is having the difficult conversations and facing the hard truths. I fear that the backlash pushed many folks to just stop and not explore it anymore. And while I get the response, it should be a sign to evolve and understand the nuance. Because there is privilege here to understand and unpack. There is also trauma and fear too. There’s room for all of it. But the room never gets used if you never unpack those boxes and proceed forward even if you’re feeling uncomfortable. I also want to add that the backlash was warranted because there was a lot of leaning into privilege and excluding the broader mixed Asian community as a whole. And those of us with privilege need to use it to raise us all up. It’s not saying we don’t deserve space, it’s acknowledging that all the space is basically being given to us when it comes to systems and visibility. Even though it might not always feel that way in our everyday lives, it’s the truth when you look at everything in context and not just your individual experience in a vacuum. All this to say, it’s not an invitation to berate people or make them feel bad or whatever - it’s a space to call in and evolve together. But that also means respecting that this video is address mixed Asians with an Asian dad and mixed Asian and whiite folks. So let’s keep that in mind.
