Is it a sin to work on Sunday? This is a question many Christians have. “I have to work on Sunday. Will God be angry with me?” “If I cannot go to church, have I sinned against God?” Actually, the Lord Jesus already helped us understand: God does not only look at a day. He looks at the heart. First, the Sabbath was not made to crush people. The Lord Jesus said: “The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath.” Mark 2:27 (KJV) Rest is a gift from God. It is not a rule meant to bind people. In the time of Jesus, some religious leaders only watched outward behavior, but they forgot the true heart of God. Second, the real issue is not only whether you work or not. You may be a nurse, a waiter, a police officer, a driver, or you may have to work on Sunday because of your situation. That does not automatically mean your heart is far from God. On the other hand, someone can go to church every Sunday and still never truly seek God. The Lord Jesus said: Matthew 15:8 (KJV) “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.” So the real question is: Is God first in your life? Is your heart occupied by work? Is your heart occupied by money? Or does God truly have first place in your heart? Third, God wants you to keep Him in your heart. The Bible says: Exodus 20:8 (KJV) “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” God does not only want you to remember Him on one certain day. He wants you to give Him a place in your heart every day. Even when you are working, you can still pray, thank God, read a few verses of His word, and commit your day to Him. So do not only ask: “Is it a sin for me to work on Sunday?” Ask yourself: “Have I truly drawn near to God this week?” Because what God looks at first is not your work schedule, but your heart. If this message encouraged you, you can write: “Lord, I want to put You first.” If you want to study God’s word more deeply and understand what the Bible teaches about rest, faith, and God’s will, you are welcome to join our online Bible study group.
