After Mao’s death, China gradually introduced market reforms while the Communist Party remained in power. Xi Jinping became China’s leader in 2012. He has strengthened the Communist Party’s control over society, centralized political power, promoted Chinese nationalism, expanded state influence over the economy, and modernized the military. Although China officially remains a socialist state, Xi has moved away from Mao’s revolutionary communism toward a model that combines state-led capitalism, authoritarian rule, and strong nationalism.
