Ahhh cool, the 4 month sleep regression. The moment your baby decides sleep was getting a little too predictable 🙃 But, listen up: the 4 month regression isn’t really a regression at all. At around 3 to 5 months, your baby’s sleep architecture permanently changes. Their sleep cycles mature, they begin moving through lighter and deeper stages of sleep more like we do, and suddenly those little transitions between cycles can become VERY noticeable. Hello 45-minute naps 👋 Hello waking every 1 to 2 hours overnight 👋 Hello baby who used to sleep beautifully and has apparently forgotten how 👋 Yes this feels like their sleep has regressed (AKA gotten worse)... But it's actually a sign their sleep is maturing and moving forwards, not going backwards. Because this is a developmental change rather than a temporary phase, waiting for it to simply “pass” isn’t always the answer. This is often the point where your baby benefits from: ✨ A more age-appropriate daily sleep schedule ✨ Wake windows that build the right amount of sleep pressure ✨ Naps timed to support their biological rhythms ✨ Gradually moving towards settling more independently, so they’re better able to navigate those new sleep cycles Your baby hasn’t suddenly become a terrible sleeper - their sleep has simply levelled up, and sometimes the way we support their sleep needs to level up with it. So yes, the 4 month regression is permanent. The hourly waking absolutely does not have to be 😂 Save this for 3am when you’re wondering what fresh hell has happened to your previously sleeping baby! And follow along if you'd like to know how you can save your sanity, and your sleep ✨️
