A video circulating online has sparked concern after an incident involving a police officer, a mother and her 12-year-old child. According to claims being shared, the child was injured during the incident, although the full circumstances have not been independently verified and are now the subject of calls for an investigation. The part that many people are talking about is the officer allegedly asking the child, “Do you want to join your mum?” If that’s exactly what was said, I think it’s fair to ask… Was that the right way to speak to a child in such a stressful situation? Police officers have an incredibly difficult job and often have to make split-second decisions. But children are different. When a child is frightened, distressed or witnessing their parent being arrested, safeguarding should be at the heart of every decision. This isn’t about attacking the police. It’s about making sure incidents involving children are handled with professionalism, compassion and accountability. If mistakes have been made, they should be acknowledged.
