One of the most common topics learners search online is how magnets are made using electricity. The method shown in the diagram is called the electrical (electromagnetic) method of making magnets. In this method, a bar of iron or steel is placed inside a solenoid (a long coil of insulated wire) connected to a battery. When electric current flows through the coil, it produces a magnetic field that magnetises the bar. This principle is known as electromagnetism and was discovered by Hans Christian Ørsted. It forms the basis of many modern electrical devices. Another frequently searched question is "How do you identify the North and South poles of a magnet made using a solenoid?" The answer is by using the right-hand grip rule (right-hand thumb rule). If you hold the solenoid with your right hand so that your fingers point in the direction of the electric current flowing through the coil, your thumb points towards the North pole of the magnet, while the opposite end becomes the South pole. This rule helps scientists, engineers, and students determine the polarity of electromagnets. Many learners also ask "What makes an electromagnet stronger?" The strength of a magnet produced by this method depends on several factors. Increasing the number of turns in the coil increases the magnetic field, making the magnet stronger. Increasing the amount of electric current flowing through the coil also strengthens the magnetic field. In addition, using a soft iron core instead of air produces a much stronger electromagnet because soft iron is easily magnetised. Another common question is "What is the difference between an electromagnet and a permanent magnet?" A permanent magnet remains magnetised without electricity, while an electromagnet only acts as a magnet when electric current flows through the coil. This makes electromagnets useful because they can be switched on and off whenever needed. Finally, many people wonder "Where are electromagnets used in everyday life?" Electromagnets are found in electric bells, loudspeakers, electric motors, generators, cranes used for lifting scrap metal, relays, magnetic door locks, MRI machines in hospitals, and many other electrical appliances. Understanding how electromagnets work helps learners appreciate the role of magnetism in science, engineering, medicine, communication, and modern technology. This topic is a key part of Uganda's Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), as it develops learners' practical skills, critical thinking, and ability to apply scientific knowledge to solve real-life problems.#foryou #cbc #asktrnabaasa #foryoupage
