@matthewmillwood0: "The night before a man goes to prison isn't about fear. It's about math. And I watched that math break stronger men than you."
"I was a correctional officer for 11 years. Watched hundreds of men on their last night of freedom. Same routine every time. Nobody sleeps."
"I'll call him Sam. 34 years old. Two kids. Reporting to prison at 8 AM. Judge gave him 72 hours to get his affairs in order before surrender.
He didn't spend it running.
He spent it doing math.
9 PM. He sat at his kitchen table. Made a list. Every bill. Every date. His son's birthday — March. His daughter's recital — June. He wouldn't be there for either.
10 PM. He tucked his kids in. Told them Daddy's going on a work trip. His son asked how long. Sam said 'a while.' He couldn't say four years out loud. Not to a seven-year-old.
11 PM. His wife stopped pretending to be strong. She asked him one question. 'What do I tell them when they ask where you are?' He didn't have an answer. He still doesn't.
1 AM. He wrote letters. One for every birthday he'd miss. Sealed them. Dated them. Told his wife not to open them early.
3 AM. He stopped packing. Just sat on the edge of the bed. Staring at his sleeping kids through the doorway. Memorizing them. Because he knew the version of them he'd see in four years — that wasn't going to be these two kids anymore.
5 AM. He showered for twenty minutes. Longest shower of his life. Last hot water he'd feel that wasn't rationed.
7 AM. He kissed his wife goodbye at the door. Didn't cry. Told me later — he'd already cried everything out by 4 AM.
7:45. He sat in the prison parking lot. Engine off. Just breathing. I watched him from the gate. Some men sit there ten minutes. He sat there thirty."
[TWIST — 1:00–1:15]
"I asked him once, months later, what he actually thought about that night.
He said: 'I didn't think about the sentence. I didn't think about the cell. I thought about every Tuesday I was going to miss. Every small, boring Tuesday. Because those add up to a whole childhood I don't get back.'
That's the part nobody prepares you for. Not the violence. Not the cage.
The Tuesdays."
"The crime takes a night. The sentence takes years. But the night before? That's when a man does the math on everything he's about to lose. And he does it wide awake, because sleep would mean stopping."
"Tell me — could you sit in that parking lot for thirty minutes, knowing what's on the other side of that gate? Or would you run? Fight it out in the comments. Follow me for more real stories from inside the walls." #prisontok #prisonstories #truecrime #correctionalofficer #behindthewalls
yes it is a time no matter how much noise is around you it's the most silent time .I have 3 numbers 2 parole violations so 5 separate trips and I drove myself to court knowing Im going ,but knowing what's gone before .I knew kids would be bigger ,and all the things ,old lady alone left to do time,on the outs, but knowing family members I wouldn't see again knowing they would pass .I lost a lot behind them walls but nothing material .One of the most things you will hear is they can't lock up my mind ,or they can't stop time but your mind definitely locks ,because the way you carry yourself on the outside will never be the same nothing will what happens is you try to hide it once home .You went in you changed adapted ,coming home your programmed now and that mind that can't be locked is stuck I can speak so much about doing time and the mental toll it takes on you, and how it makes you a danger to the public and a lot don't even realize it themselves. sorry to blab on without proper punctuation and run on sentences I know I got my g.e.d. in the slammer!

16 years in. Some things never get easier. People don’t realize some things break us. Again and again.

I have done the time on the outside, the one waiting out that time day by day. Time does not spin the same when you are waiting.

There will forever be a major conflict in interest, as long as our justice system is profiteering off of the criminality of the society
