If your therapist is untrained in OCD treatment, they may very well be doing harm. This is because many therapists use reassurance as a means to help clients. And clients with ocd really want reassurance. But reassurance feeds the cycle of OCD. It is very hard as a therapist not to give clients reassurance when it provides such instant relief but it is IMPERATIVE that as therapists, we don’t give in. This doesn’t mean we can’t validate or be compassionate, but it means we can’t give the ocd what it wants and we need to use that opportunity as exposure for skill practice. Reassurance giving is just one of many ways an untrained therapist can be ineffective with OCD (at best). If you’re in therapy, have ocd, and aren’t getting better it may be because your therapist is using theories and helping skills that are contraindicated with ocd and it might be time to find a specialist.
