Many people have a high-school diploma and cannot read or write. It doesn't take much to out perform the public school system. I pulled my children out of public schools 4 to 6 weeks every year for international travel. They were not marked absent and had no work to make up because the school system recognizes that travel is far more educational than a classroom.

really depends on the state sadly. Alot of states don't require the standardized testing And there's no oversight over the homeschooling programs.

I really wish this is how it was. This is how it is supposed to be. But homeschool laws are almost never enforced in court unless it’s a dispute between parents over whether to homeschool their kids. It’s really really sad, even in a very “progressive” blue state like WA where I am educational neglect is RAMPANT within homeschool communities.

um i homeschool right? 2 kids. we do not have to take standardized tests lol, no one says what i have to teach (they recommend the 4 cores) but i could teach them about birds all year if i wanted

Every state has different home school laws. Some are extremely lax, some are extremely strict, most are in the middle. Some states require yearly tests, some specify which years, some don’t require any tests.

I'm wanting to have my baby be homeschooled because I want to teach her the things she needs to know how she needs to be taught. I want her to have the 1 on 1 she will most likely need. Plus I want to be able to give her a more flexible schedule for schooling. Because why am I yelled at for taking my child for a vacation in public school even when I get the homework?

Not all states require standardized testing, my state gives you the option of yearly testing or portfolio review, some states don’t even require that. And while I agree that what they are doing is educational neglect, the same could be said of Private Christian Schools that use the same curriculum (Abeka) and also aren’t required to do standardized testing.

my state has very low standards for homeschooling they only require you to register and supposed to do so many hours. we dont have to do standardized testing but that doesnt mean I am not gonna give my child the best education I can.

most states do not make homeschooled children take standardized tests, i agree that this is how it *should* be, but unfortunately only handful of states make you follow their requirements for classes but NONE of them make you follow their exact curriculum.

Here’s the thing the kids in Public Schools fail all their standardized tests. Seriously most schools have like 50% proficiency in math, English, and science.

I homeschool my 16 year old daughter. She is registered as a homeschool student in our district. She has a full curriculum. She follows all of the graduation requirements for our state. Once a year, I have to give a portfolio with a certified teacher evaluation completed to our district. She DOES NOT take any standardized tests. We opt out and we do not have to give any reasons. If she chooses to get her graduation recognized by our state, she will have to take the ACT or the SAT in its place, which she will take anyways, if she wants to go to college.

As homeschooled kid we had to go into the school every year and take that test. We also went through the school so the principal came out every 2 weeks and checked our work and made sure we understood what was being taught?

Some states like the one I’m in.. doesn’t require this. And “tests” are monitored by honor schools. (: I homeschool however we really tackle more advanced stuff
