I ran the opening of Moby Dick through Research Prospect’s AI detector. Herman Melville published it in 1851. The detector came back with 7% AI-generated and another 37% flagged as human-written but AI-refined, so 44% of the text was marked as involving AI in some way. The first sentence it highlighted as AI-generated was “Call me Ishmael.” The first commercially successful typewriter did not go on sale until 1874, twenty-three years after the book was published.
