South Africa is bracing for a bitterly cold spell, with snowfall expected across several parts of the country between 10 and 13 August 2026. A powerful cold front and cut-off low are expected to bring very cold temperatures, strong winds, rain and snowfall, particularly over high-lying and mountainous areas. Parts of Gauteng including areas around Johannesburg , the North West, Free State, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Western Cape could experience the impact of the winter system, with the eastern Free State, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Mpumalanga Highveld and parts of south-eastern Gauteng among areas where snowfall has been forecast. Weather reports indicate that some higher elevations could receive significant snowfall, while Johannesburg and other lower-lying areas are more likely to experience very cold conditions and rain, with snow remaining possible in favourable elevated areas. Residents are urged to prepare for the cold conditions, while motorists travelling through mountainous areas should exercise caution as snow, ice, strong winds and poor visibility could create hazardous road conditions.
