AUSTRALIA NEEDS STRONGER LAWS TO PROTECT OUR COMMUNITIES We call on the Australian Government and lawmakers to introduce stronger, tougher and more appropriate measures against serious violent crime, particularly deliberate acts that cause serious injury or take another person’s life. When penalties are not strong enough to deter serious crime, offenders may believe that the consequences are worth the risk. This can undermine public confidence and leave ordinary people feeling unsafe in their own communities. Human life is precious. Deliberately taking another person’s life is one of the most serious crimes imaginable, and those responsible must be held fully accountable under the law. We are not calling for revenge. We are calling for justice, accountability and public safety. Our laws must be fair, but they must also be strong enough to protect innocent people and deter serious violent crime. Stronger laws – Safer communities. A safe Australia needs a justice system that sends a clear message: anyone who deliberately takes another person’s life will face serious and proportionate legal consequences.
