“While revolutionaries as individuals can be murdered, you cannot kill ideas.” - Thomas Sankara He was 33 when he took power in Burkina Faso and renamed it the Land of Upright People. For Sankara, revolution was not a slogan. It was bread, land, vaccines, and dignity for the people of his country.
"We must choose either champagne for a few or safe drinking water for all" In four years he vaccinated 2.5 million children against meningitis, yellow fever and measles. Launched a mass literacy campaign that transformed one of the world's lowest literacy rates from 17% to 73%. Planted over 10 million trees to fight desertification. Redistributed land from feudal landlords directly to peasants, doubling wheat yields and making the country food self-sufficient. Women were appointed to high office, recruited into the military, forced marriage was outlawed and FGM. “The revolution and women’s liberation go together. We do not talk of women’s emancipation as an act of charity.” At the UN he confronted the global order directly. Stating that imperialism and neo-colonial debt kept Africa structurally dependent. His politics were grounded in class struggle, self-reliance and popular mobilization. Production over dependency. Dignity over aid. Collective power over comprador elites. On October 15, 1987, he was assassinated in a coup led by his closest friend and comrade, Blaise Compaoré. The coup is widely understood to have been supported by imperial interests, particularly the former colonial power, France, threatened by a leader who refused to submit. They buried him in an unmarked grave. But the hope he instilled in generations to come still threatens those in power. “We must dare to invent the future.” Sankara proved that anti-imperialism can be lived, not just spoken, that power can serve the people, and that four years is enough to leave a permanent mark. #thomassankara #burkinafaso #blackliberation #africa #socialism
