If You’re Losing Your Hair, Start Here ❤️If you’re experiencing hair loss, I know how scary and upsetting it can be. Whether you’re finding more hair in the shower, seeing your part getting wider, noticing bald patches or just feeling like something isn’t right, please don’t ignore it.
I wish I had known earlier how important it is to investigate hair loss properly. The sooner you work out why you’re losing your hair, the sooner you can start doing something about it.
This is what I would recommend doing.
1. Get your bloodwork done
Start with your GP and ask for a full blood work-up.
Don’t just ask for the basic blood test. Talk to your doctor about checking things like:
* Ferritin and iron
* Vitamin D
* B12 and folate
* Thyroid
* Zinc
* Copper
* Insulin and blood sugar
* Testosterone and other hormones
Basically, find out what you’re lacking or whether something is out of balance.
A low ferritin level, for example, can be associated with hair shedding, even when your other blood results look okay.
2. Check your hormones
If you’re experiencing other symptoms alongside your hair loss, don’t overlook hormones.
Ask your GP whether you should be investigated for things such as PCOS, thyroid problems, perimenopause/menopause or other hormone abnormalities.
Hormonal changes can have a huge effect on your hair.
3. Look at the bigger picture
Think about what else has been happening with your body.
Have you recently been sick? Lost a lot of weight? Been under a huge amount of stress? Changed your diet? Having digestive problems? Feeling exhausted?
Iron deficiency and nutritional deficiencies can contribute to hair loss, and sometimes there can be problems with absorbing nutrients properly.
If you think you have gut issues, talk to your GP about appropriate testing rather than relying on random tests you find online.
4. Find someone who actually understands hair loss
This one is important.
Ask your GP for a referral to a dermatologist who actually specialises in hair loss and alopecia.
Not every dermatologist is a hair-loss specialist.
You can also see a qualified trichologist who can assess your hair and scalp and help you understand.
