@lens_on_somalia: Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke (1919–1969) was one of the most important leaders of Somalia’s early republic. He served as Somalia’s first Prime Minister from 1960 to 1964, helping lead the newly independent nation and promoting a neutral, independent foreign policy. In 1967, he was democratically elected by Somalia’s Parliament to become the country’s second President, succeeding Aden Abdulle Osman (Aden Adde) as President, he was known for his diplomacy, nationalism, humility and commitment to Somalia’s development and national unity. His presidency was tragically cut short when he was assassinated on 15 October, 1969 in Laascaanood (Las-Anod), just two years after taking office.
