Here’s the single mistake parents make when two kids start fighting. To immediately make it stop or make it fair. We treat it as one shared problem. Who gets what? Who’s in the wrong? How do I make this stop? But the problem is one child’s distress stays unresolved and is likely to come back. But in this conflict, I treated each child as having their own problem inside the same situation. Theo needed redirection, while Freya needed co-regulation that helped uncover and meet what she actually needed. I’m running a free live workshop this week on how to read what each child actually needs during conflict, and know how to respond. Go to my link in bio to join my community for a 7 day free trial and register for the workshop. So the mistake is naming the visible dispute as the problem: toy, sharing, provoking. The real work is identifying what each child is trying to get, protect, avoid or restore.
