Today, LEDs are everywhere - in our phones, cars, medical equipment, streetlights, screens, and homes. They have become so ordinary that it is easy to forget how long it took us to get here. The first practical LEDs appeared in the 1960s. Red came first, followed by green and other colors. But for decades, one important piece was missing: a bright and efficient blue LED. Creating blue light was much more difficult. It required semiconductor materials capable of producing higher-energy photons. Gallium nitride (GaN) was a promising candidate, but growing high-quality crystals and making efficient devices from it remained an enormous challenge. It took decades of research before Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura helped make efficient blue LEDs a reality - work that earned them the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics. And blue changed everything. Red + green + blue made modern full-color LED displays possible. Blue LEDs combined with phosphors also opened the way to bright, efficient white lighting. The result is a technology that uses far less energy, lasts much longer, and has helped make efficient lighting accessible around the world. Sometimes the technologies that transform our lives don’t look impressive at all. Sometimes, they are just a tiny point of blue light. #LED #Technology #edit #Physics #Engineering
