@cheaplazyvegan: READ: I don’t care about the “technical” definition of veganism and the technicality that bivalves are categorically animals. I care about the ethical argument- the question shouldn’t be “are bivalves vegan?” But rather, “is it ethical to consume bivalves”. The MAIN REASON for my (and many other people’s) veganism is that the great majority of animals (minus bivalves) are SENTIENT and have the capacity to feel pain, to suffer and to know what’s going on. So when the science suggests that bivalves are NOT sentient, I don’t see why it is ethically wrong to consume bivalves when sentience is literally the justification we ALWAYS USE as a vegan community to eat plants and avoid eating animals … Anyway, absolutely ZERO hate to this creator, i prob agree with her like 95% of the time but just had to chime in for this one #vegan #bivalves #veganism #vegantalks

By definition bivalves are animals so you probably wouldn’t be considered vegan if you’re eating them by other vegans. And they do have nervous systems just not central nervous system’s, complex one’s considered brains. But it shouldn’t be some big argument, people follow it because they like the ethical reasons which are pretty cut and dry… plants yum! animals and by products nooo!

veganism is about exploiting less. and so being excited to find loopholes to exploit more is not vegan

The thing is we LITERALLY dont know if they are sentient or not. Obv u shouldnt go with "we classified it as an animal therefore its a nono" but bivalves HAVE ganglia aka nervous system structures just not centralized. So we cant know and if you are unsure if you would induce UNNECESSARY pain then just dont do it

Wool, honey, and fertilizer are animal waste (not sentient) and fungus is sentient. Also plants communicate, scream, and enjoy music so idk. Do what feels good and right to you, even if that means vegan except bacon or whatever.

I guess that it depends why a person became vegan. Some went vegan because of animal cruelty and others because of the environmental impact. For the latter it wouldn't make sense to eat mussels and oysters since overfishing them contributes to weaken the underwater ecosystem

the thing about oysters and mussles imo is the fact that buying them is financing the whole fishing industry, which isn't vegan as it not only kills a lot of the sea animals but also destroy entire ecosystems

i 100% agree with your take, i just dont think its a good idea to eat oyters and mussles because you are supporting tve fishing industry which is DETREMENTAL to the planet and our oceans. This leads to worse ecosystems and therefore bad environment for everyone, including animals. so no oysters for me

Amen. It frustrates me when some vegans ignore the logic behind veganism when it comes to non-sentient animals. It makes veganism look like a purity cult instead of an ethical position.

you can also be vegan for environmental reasons, because animals need a lot more farm land per calorie compared to eating the plants directly. But actually oyster and mussels farming is good for the environment! They clean the water and require zero food or fertilizer.

The thing that I'm always concerned about is how are we 100% sure that they can't feel anything? I wanna remind you that we thought Lobster doesnt feel pain for a long time. Studies to that where first released in the 2000s-2010s. We just found out that flies can feel something similar to fear. When an animals body is very far aways from our own we tend to argue "they dont have the thing we have that we need to feel therefore they cant feel". I'd rather be on the safe side.

Oysters have nerve ganglia and respond to stimuli (not using simple ion channels like Venus fly traps). They are classified the way they are for a reason. Humans used to think fish didn’t feel pain either keep that in mind.

People are so obsessed with definitions they’ve forgotten the whole point. Being vegan is about saving living beings, as in living things with consciousness

Vegans don't eat, wear, watch, exploit animals because they are sentient beings. If you don't eat animals you're plant based. If you avoid animal exploitation in all other aspects also, you're vegan. not enough people talk about this

Vegans don’t eat ANY animals out of respect for them. Even if you think some species are lesser than others, this logic just continues to move the goalpost as to what’s “acceptable” to consume and eventually leads to all animals being exploited.

oysters, mussels DO feel pain, That's one of the reasons why then close their she'll when their bodies are touched, THEY DO HAVE NERVOUS SYSTEM, just because something is not truly proven yet does not mean it's not existant, 200 years ago we didn't consider birds to feel pain,SPOILER ALERT, They do

They may not have a central nervous system, some mussels have neural clumps. Some mussels have morphine and opioid receptors, which are stimulated by physical trauma or fast temperature changes. Some Mussels adapt their behaviour based on the presence of predators (based on things like scent or shadow) and remain open for longer if they are among a large group of individuals And some can move their position towards more favourable feeding spots or away from danger. So overall there are some indications that at least some bivalves have some lower form of conciounce. The animal / no animal definition is stupid, because nothing in nature fits into any neat categories, and sponges are also animals, but have even less indicators for sentience and would probably not cause this sort of discussion if consumed regularly. But even plants and fungi or bacteria have some behaviours that act as responses to danger etc. so we can't be certain about their absence of conciounceness. Just that their structure is very different from ours and we have more evidence for the conciounce of 'normal' animals (and eating animals still also involves the killing of plants to feed said animals). And pretty much every argument is just "they are animals" vs "no central nervous system" and that is it.
