When Jesus says I never knew you, he actually actually means "I never chose you". God chooses (Elects) us not the other way round. If we end up in heaven it is an act of pure mercy. Nobody will enter heaven "because they were smarter than other people, and believed the gospel". Believing in Christ is not something we do, but is gifted to us by the Holy Spirit. No one can believe in Christ unless the Holy Spirit is with them. The Apostle Paul says "I endure everything for the sake of the elect" notice he doesn't say everyone. Although God mercifully chooses us we are still required to believe, they are not mutually exclusive, which is an important point. Not everyone will believe, which is difficult to grasp. But the key thing to remember is that "our faith" doesn't come from within us. If we believe, it is because God took the first step. Blessed are those who are called to the Lambs supper. If we believe and reach out to others, the credit is not ours, it is God's. So pride is extinguished in the believer. It is easy to get boastful, I have seen a number of videos on here where believers seem to shout out loudly at people, I am pretty sure that Christ didn't yell at people like this. I think a patient and loving approach is necessary. I guess in the end only the Elect will actually respond to the Gospel, which seems to be God the Father's plan from the beginning.
