She would bring her favorite drink after work, fix her hair when it got messy, and casually reach for her hand whenever they walked together. But lately, something had changed. At least, that was what Winter thought. Karina started coming home later. She spent more time on her phone. Sometimes, she would read Winter’s messages but take hours to reply. Sometimes, Karina would cancel their plans because something suddenly came up. And every time it happened, Winter told herself the same thing. She’s just busy. Don’t overthink it. She still loves you. But the thoughts never really stopped. One night, Winter sat on the edge of their bed, staring at her phone. Karina had been out with friends. 12:47 AM. Still no message. Winter typed: Are you coming home soon? She stared at it for a few seconds before deleting it. She didn’t want to seem clingy. She didn’t want Karina to think she was demanding too much. So instead, she simply put her phone down and whispered to herself. “Maybe she’s just tired of me.” The thought immediately hurt. Winter shook her head. “No. She wouldn’t.” But deep down, she wasn’t sure anymore. ⸻ When Karina finally came home, Winter pretended to be asleep. Karina quietly changed clothes before getting into bed. She looked at Winter for a moment. “Baby?” No response. Karina smiled softly and pulled the blanket over her. “Good night, my love.” Winter heard her. She wanted to turn around. She wanted to ask: Do you still love me? Did I do something wrong? Are you getting tired of us? But none of those words came out. Instead, Winter closed her eyes tighter. “Good night,” she whispered. Karina didn’t hear it. And that was how it always happened. Winter felt too much. Karina noticed too little. ⸻ Days passed. Winter became quieter. She stopped asking Karina to spend time with her. Stopped complaining when Karina canceled plans.
