BOULDER, COLORADO – Justice in the Death of Zaria Hardee A Boulder County jury delivered a dramatic verdict in December 2025 in a case that gripped the Boulder community for over a year. Jimmy West, 53, was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of 19-year-old Zaria Hardee — a young woman whose body was discovered wrapped in layers on a bike trailer in July 2024. In the summer of 2024, neighbors reported an unusual bike trailer sitting on Goss Street near 18th Street and Canyon Boulevard. Police were called and discovered Hardee’s remains, badly decomposed after days in the heat. Hardee, who was experiencing homelessness at the time, had been seen last alive days earlier and was believed to be vulnerable due to her circumstances. Investigators linked items used to bind her body — including tent fabric, rope, and tape — to materials found at West’s camp in Boulder. DNA evidence on the tent materials also connected him to the scene. West was arrested early in 2025 and charged with first-degree murder and human trafficking. He pleaded not guilty. After a week-long trial, jurors convicted him of second-degree murder — concluding that he was responsible for Hardee’s death even though they did not find premeditation at the level required for a first-degree charge. The judge sentenced West to 96 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections, followed by five years of mandatory parole — a term the prosecution and Hardee’s family said reflects the severity of the crime. Hardee’s family described her as adventurous and independent, a young woman with her whole life ahead of her. In sentencing remarks, prosecutors and law enforcement highlighted the challenges the case posed, including locating witnesses in Boulder’s unhoused community and piecing together evidence from limited physical traces. #Boul#BoulderCrimet#JusticeForZariae#TrueCrimeColoradoe#truestoryco#accountabilitycheck
