1. “Normal” bloodwork doesn’t always mean optimal for hair growth. A lab being inside the reference range doesn’t automatically tell me that everything is ideal for you or your hair. I’m looking at actual values, patterns between markers, symptoms, trends over time, nutrient status and what type of hair loss I’m seeing. 2. Blood sugar and insulin can affect your hair. Insulin resistance can influence inflammation, hormone signaling and androgen activity. This is one reason I care about metabolic health when I’m investigating certain patterns of hair loss, especially androgenetic hair loss. 3. Your gut health and your hair health are connected. Your gut is involved in nutrient absorption, immune regulation and inflammation. That doesn’t mean every case of hair loss is a “gut problem,” but if someone has chronic digestive issues, deficiencies that aren’t improving or signs of systemic inflammation, I’m not ignoring their gut while only treating their scalp. 4. Your genetics can influence whether topical minoxidil works for you. Topical minoxidil needs to be converted into its active form, minoxidil sulfate, by sulfotransferase enzymes in the follicle. People vary in this enzyme activity, which is one reason topical minoxidil can work really well for one person and barely at all for another. (I personally have a very reduced amount of this enzyme I found out when I did a DNA test) 5. The hair you’re shedding today may have been triggered months ago. With telogen effluvium, the trigger often happens roughly 2–3 months before you notice the shedding. When asking questions, I’m going backward and looking for illness, surgery, rapid weight loss, major stress, hormonal changes, nutritional changes, medications and other potential triggers. #hairloss #sandiegotrichologist #hairlosssolutions #hairshedding #hairgrowth
