Imagine the year is 2055, and some eccentric billionaire of the future has an exciting announcement to make. They have invented something called the ‘teletransporter.’ The teletransporter is a new technology that will scan your entire bodily composition. It’ll map your brain and record every particle in your body from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet, and then it will atomise you. It’ll break you down into your component parts and send these parts at the speed of light across to Mars, where another teletransporter will reconstruct you using the same ingredients. The question that Parfit asks is, ‘Is the person on Mars the same person that left Earth, or have you actually killed the Earthling and reconstructed a Martian replica?’ The thought experiment is confusing even more, when we imagined that we could create thousands of replicas of this exact body composition. And so if we believe that consciousness is the result of our brain, does this mean that we have thousands of identical consciousnesses feeling the same thing? So why is it that first personhood, that feeling of me being me, is limited to only one body? The teletransporter is an interesting thought experiment, but it’s also a good question to ask ourselves. Would you enter the teletransporter, or do you believe there is more to who you are than just your body?
