Baba Itreti. When I was young I went by the name Jago, all because I begged for sachet milk from Iya Isaiah. I grew up in a community called Inu-Ewe. I was 5 years old back then and had no knowledge of what life really meant. Now as I watch this children play around the streets with tires while I think about my long awaited wire. Then nostalgia hit and I remember Baba Ireti. You see Baba Ireti retired as an operator at the Nigerian Brewery Industry and was only able to build half his house, which included a floored room, a pit out the house and a roof on a plot of land. But as time progressed we watched Baba Ireti go blind, oh what a sad experience. A vibrant man turned to this sad specimen, for everytime he wanted to see his friend down the streets, he would shout my name and immediately I would run inside so I don’t get to walk him back and forth. Some days I’m so unlucky, I walk him round the community to greet his old colleagues. This wasn’t something I love em doing cause it hindered my playtime with my friends but my mom insisted. And when Baba Ireti didn’t want to be a burden, he would try to find his way, falling into dish and spinning in circles while we laugh or when he walks in circle uttering Yoruba like its sour on his tongue or when he points one way but means the other, we would die of laughter as the kids we were. His matter grew worse, as the pension wasn’t enough, aunty Ireti couldn’t take enough of her father’s condition, we saw her go mental on the same streets. Fast forward, they said Baba Ireti never woke up, I walked him around for 3 hours yesterday and he kept apologizing for all the times he stole from my childhood. Oh Baba Ireti, I wish I could see you and tell you I was just a child. Because now the kids laugh at me #isah #isahvr #isahvrexperience
