Kandy, nestled among the green hills of central Sri Lanka, is one of the most important cultural and spiritual centres of the island. At its heart stands the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a revered Buddhist shrine and a powerful symbol of Sri Lanka’s long Buddhist heritage. For centuries, Sinhala Buddhist ancestors protected their faith, language, customs and traditions through periods of war, political change and foreign rule. They built temples, monasteries, stupas, reservoirs and irrigation systems, while enriching Sri Lanka through literature, art, architecture, medicine and scholarship. Their achievements reflect not only religious devotion but also remarkable knowledge, discipline and ingenuity. Kandy became the last royal capital of the Sinhala kingdom and preserved much of this heritage. The annual Esala Perahera continues to honour the Sacred Tooth Relic and showcases centuries-old Buddhist traditions through rituals, drumming, dancing and pageantry. Sinhala Buddhist pride is therefore not simply about ancestry. It is about recognising a civilisation that endured, contributed and preserved its identity across generations. True pride should inspire gratitude for our ancestors, respect for our heritage and a responsibility to protect it with wisdom, dignity and compassion for those who come after us.
