🚨 Handling delivering bad news👇 🧠 It’s never nice having to deliver news that you know is going to disappoint or upset someone. It’s natural to feel really uncomfortable about it. ▶️ As a manager sometimes our own discomfort can lead us to check out emotionally and deliver the news in a robotic way that lacks empathy. 💡 A really important skill to master as a manager is tolerating our own discomfort so we can still show up to the conversation in a constructive way that is also considerate and empathetic. 🚫 It can be tempting to avoid these kind of conversations- I would encourage you to try not to do this. ▶️ Here a 4 steps to help you: 1️⃣ Thank the person for applying and say something that the panel appreciated e.g. you were a strong candidate in lots of areas or you answered the technical questions really well 2️⃣ Let them know that the decision is to give the job to another candidate and the reason why (focus on highlighting a skill or experience gap) 3️⃣ Show them that you still believe in them or their capabilities. Offer to go through some feedback in detail and draw up a plan together to help them close any skill or experience gaps 4️⃣ Ask them if they want to talk further or if they would prefer time to process things (don’t launch in with feedback without their consent) You’ve got this 🙌 📌 Please be mindful that the perspective offered in this video is generalised and won’t fit every situation so please follow your instincts about whether this applies to your situation.
