It was almost midnight when Lena’s phone rang. Unknown caller. she answered. “ Hello?” “L-Lena?” The voice was slurred. “I’m sorry is this Dr. Schuett?” “Yes. Who’s this?” “It’s Z.” “I know it’s late,” Z continued between drunken laughs, “but can you please pick Miu up?” Lena glanced at the clock. 11:54 PM. “What happened?” “We had dinner.” Lena pinched the bridge of her nose. “Where are you?” Z told her the restaurant’s location. Lena didn’t even think twice. “I’ll be there.” minutes later, Lena pulled into the parking lot. She immediately spotted the four women standing outside the restaurant. Aki and Chin were trying and failing to keep Miu standing. “There she is,” Z sighed She carefully wrapped one arm around Miu’s waist while placing Miu’s arm over her shoulder. she leaned almost all her weight onto Lena. “She’s heavier than she looks,” Lena muttered. “I heard that,” Miu murmured. “No, you didn’t.” “I did…” The girls laughed. She slowly guided Miu toward the passenger seat and helped her buckle in. Before closing the door, Miu blinked slowly at her. “You’re pretty.” froze. “You’re drunk.” “I know.” Lena quietly shut the door before anyone else heard. “Text me when you all get home,” “We will,” Z answered. Lena gave them a small nod before driving away. Miu kept mumbling. None of it made sense. A few minutes later “ Do surgeons get tired?” “Very.” “ Then sleep.” “I will.” “ Promise?” “I promise.” Silence settled again. Miu had fallen asleep. A loose strand of hair covered part of her face. Without thinking, Lena carefully tucked it behind her ear. immediately pulling her hand back “What are you doing…” she whispered to herself. Lena focused back on the road. When they arrived, only the porch light was still on. helper quickly opened the front door. “Oh, Ma’am Miu…” “She had a little too much tonight,” “Thank you for bringing her home, Doctor.” they slowly guided Miu upstairs. Miu completely ignored the bed. Instead, she dropped herself dramatically onto the large sofa near the window. “I’m sleeping here.” Lena sighed softly. There was no arguing with a drunk person. “I’m Nanny Mali,” the older woman introduced with a warm smile. “Lena.” She smiled kindly. “Miu talks about you these days.” “She does?” “Mostly about how Alora refuses to let you leave.” Lena laughed quietly. While Nanny gently wiped Miu’s face and helped her change into comfortable clothes. “I’ve been with Miu since the day she was born.” Lena looked over. “Really?” “I watched her grow up.” She chuckled softly. “She was such a stubborn little girl.” She continued talking Lena listened quietly “She told me everything growing up.” “The first time someone broke her heart.” “Then she met Miguel.” Nanny smiled warmly “I’ve never seen her that happy.” “They loved each other very much.” “They really did.” After finishing, she placed the towel back into the basin. “It’s raining heavily outside.” “You can sleep in Alora’s room.” Lena hesitated. Then nodded. “Thank you.” After Nanny left She picked up the jacket hanging over the sofa’s armrest. A hand caught hers. Lena looked down. Miu. Still asleep. “ Sleep beside me.” Her voice was barely above a whisper. without opening her eyes, Miu slightly made space beside her on the wide sofa. Lena swallowed. She gently tried freeing her hand. Miu instinctively tightened her grip. Another unsuccessful attempt Nothing Lena let out a defeated sigh Carefully, she sat on th space beside Miu. Every muscle in her body stayed stiff She kept a careful distance. Making sure there was space between them. Miu unconsciously turned. Slowly resting her head against Lena’s shoulder. asleep. unaware. Lena completely froze Her heartbeat became painfully loud The thought made guilt settle immediately inside her chest She didn’t move waiting for the moment she could quietly leave. But sometime between the sound of the rain the warmth of another person’s quiet breathing Lena’s eyes slowly grew heavy. For someone who struggled to sleep almost every night because her mind never stopped thinking Tonight Sleep came unexpectedly easy Lena fell asleep beside Miu. #lenamiu
