A psychiatrist who testified in Lindsay Clancy's defense today (Tuesday, August 18, day 15) acknowledged that she didn't report hearing voices until the day she killed her three children, but he said her medical records still indicate she may have been experiencing psychosis. Donald Condie didn't meet with Clancy, but he reviewed her medical records and testified as an expert witness about her postpartum problems. In cross-exam, Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham had him confirm that Clancy didn't report hearing voices to her psychiatrist or mental health counselor, then asked,

Is that fair to say?" "Correct," Condie answered. "Thank you. Nothing further," Buckingham said. In re-direct, Clancy's lawyer Kevin Reddington asked Condie agrees "there are reasons that a woman would not tell the doctor or minimize their symptoms out of fear?" "Yes," Condie answered. "What kind of fear? Fear of what?" Reddington asked. "Well, in the records, it stated that Ms. Clancy reported she was worried that her children would be taken away from her, perhaps by the Department of Children and Families, if she reported very severe symptoms," Condie said. "The other thing is, as a health care professional, boards of registration sometimes take a dim view of people who have been in treatment for certain psychiatric illnesses, and so she might have been concerned about her nursing license, but that's speculation." "So there are other reasons why a person may be concerned about telling healthcare providers, mandated reporters, that they're hearing voices. Correct?" Reddington asked. "Yes," Condie answered. "Would you agree with me that you don't have to see the proverbial unicorn in the corner to your health provider to be suffering from psychosis?" Reddington asked. "Yes, that's true," Condie answered. Condie said psychosis "can be quite episodic." "An episode can start and stop, and then an interval of time goes by. It could be days, weeks, or months, and then another episode occurs," Condie said. Condie testified for about 70 minutes.
