@nourishingapothecary: Why are people drinking tart cherry juice before bed? There’s actually some interesting physiology behind this one. Tart cherries naturally contain a small amount of melatonin, the hormone involved in signalling to our biological clock that night has begun and helping regulate our sleep and wake cycle. But there’s another pathway I find interesting. Tart cherries also contain tryptophan, an amino acid used to produce serotonin, which can then be converted into melatonin. There have been some small studies looking at tart cherry juice and sleep, with some showing improvements in measures such as total sleep time and sleep efficiency. But I want to be clear. Tart cherry juice isn’t a sedative, and I wouldn’t position it as a magic solution for insomnia. If someone isn’t sleeping properly, I still want to understand why. Tart cherry is also rich in polyphenols, particularly anthocyanins, the compounds responsible for that deep red colour. These have antioxidant and anti inflammatory activity, which is why tart cherry has also been studied for exercise recovery and muscle soreness. The two concentrates I’m showing here are Mt Wilder Tart Cherry Juice and Dr Superfoods Tart Cherry Concentrate. Because they’re concentrated, you only need a small amount diluted in water. Always follow the directions on the individual product.
