They approached us first, and because we’re naturally approachable, we assumed they simply wanted to entertain us. Since they were wearing mascots, we trusted the situation and entertained them back. But once we started recording, their actions became uncomfortable and crossed a line we never agreed to. And this is something I’ve experienced before in different situations. Sometimes, when something uncomfortable happens, I don’t immediately react—not because I’m okay with it, but because my mind is still processing what just happened. I may only realize afterward how uncomfortable I actually was. That’s why this is a reminder to everyone: you don’t owe anyone your attention just because they approached you first. You don’t owe them a conversation, a picture, a reaction, or access to your personal space. Be kind, but stay aware. Be friendly, but know your limits. And if something feels wrong, you are allowed to walk away—even if you couldn’t speak up in the moment. Your silence is not consent. Your friendliness is not an invitation.
