Before I started this page, I remember wishing there was more content on conflict resolution. So much happens behind the scenes in marriages that we never see. We watch happy couples on Instagram divorce seemingly out of nowhere. The secrecy doesn’t help anyone. Imagine if instead, you turned to trusted friends when things got rocky, and they actually strengthened your marriage? I have friends like that. Every time we talk, I leave a better wife. That’s how it was always meant to be. So what’s the anatomy of a conflict? This one resolved in under 5 minutes. It very well could have turned into days of silent treatment. 1. State your case & listen to theirs. Create an environment where feelings are safe and received. He told me how he felt. I accepted it and shared my side, without brushing off his experience. 2. Agree, disagree, or counter. In a respectful marriage, the answer is always counter. Never “I’m 100% right and you’re wrong.” Always “I see your side. Here’s mine. Here’s where we go next.” 3. You need BOTH a physical resolution AND an emotional one. It can’t just be “okay, I’ll do better next time” and then you walk away. Your body needs to process it too: a hug, a laugh, a repair, a bedroom sesh;) We are physical beings. Emotions move through the body, not just the mind. 4. Repair attempts. The Gottmans say repair attempts are one of the strongest predictors of long-term marriage success. An inside joke, a silly face, something that brings connection back after you’ve taken each other seriously. We’ve been practicing this for 4 years and not every conversation ends this simply. Have grace for yourself and your partner. Don’t tolerate disrespect. And give your marriage the time it needs to grow. The mess is what makes it art. 🤍 Lead with curiosity, not judgment. Always. Your friend, Lexi
