Mozart wrote 8 bars of this. Then he died. It was December 1791. Mozart was 35 years old, bedridden, and had been working on his Requiem for months — a commission from an anonymous stranger that had arrived in the summer and that Mozart, in his increasingly weakened state, had become convinced was a commission for his own death. He was right. The Lacrimosa — "full of tears" — was the movement he was working on when his hand finally stopped. Eight bars. The sopranos and altos had just entered. The harmony was building toward something enormous. Then nothing. Mozart died on the 5th of December, 1791. He was buried in an unmarked grave. His wife Constanze, desperate for the income the completed Requiem would bring, hired his student Franz Xaver Süßmayr to finish it. Süßmayr completed the Lacrimosa, finished the remaining movements, and the work was delivered to the anonymous commissioner. That commissioner, it later emerged, was Count Franz von Walsegg — a nobleman who planned to pass the work off as his own composition. Mozart's final masterpiece was written for someone who wanted to steal it. The 8 bars Mozart actually wrote are among the most devastating in all of music. A falling motif, a choir singing "Lacrimosa dies illa" — "that day of tears and mourning." A man writing the music for his own funeral, note by note, until he couldn't anymore. Some music is more than music. This is a life, ending in real time. What piece of music makes you feel the weight of time?
