A blue whale’s tongue is so massive that it can weigh as much as an elephant. The largest animal to ever live on Earth has evolved an incredible feeding system to support its enormous size, and its tongue is a huge part of that. A fully grown blue whale can reach over 30 metres in length and weigh more than 150 tonnes, so it makes sense that even a single body part would be unbelievably large. When a blue whale feeds, it opens its mouth and lunges through huge swarms of krill. In a single gulp it can take in over 70 tonnes of water and prey. Its enormous tongue acts like a giant piston inside the mouth, helping force the water back out through rows of baleen plates that hang from the whale’s upper jaw. These baleen plates act like a sieve, trapping thousands of tiny krill while the water escapes. Once the water is gone, the whale simply swallows the concentrated mouthful of food. To put it into perspective, a blue whale’s tongue can weigh around 2 to 3 tonnes, which is roughly the same weight as a full grown elephant. And that’s just the tongue. The whale’s heart is also famously huge, weighing around 180 kilograms and pumping blood through arteries wide enough for a human arm to fit inside. Despite their gigantic size, blue whales mainly survive on tiny shrimp-like animals called krill. During feeding season, a single whale can eat up to 4 tonnes of krill per day.
