Descartes once argued that it is necessary, once in your life, to question everything you believe and everything you value. You need to find a quiet spot, do a great deal of thinking, and go back to first principles. Because most people collect their beliefs like some kind of cultural inheritance, and we take these items and we stuff them in the great attic of our mind until we can move no longer. This attic is riddled with half-truths, falsehoods, and misunderstandings, and so we need to stop occasionally to sort things out. We need an intellectual reset. We need to spring-clean the attic. Descartes uses an apple basket metaphor. Because if you have a basket of apples and you suspect that one is rotten, you don't just poke around, because you will spread the rot. You have to pour the apples onto some surface and look at them each individually, and put them back in the basket only when you are 100% certain that they are good. This pouring of the apples is known as 'Cartesian doubt.' It's when we consciously and intentionally unlearn all of those things that we know. And it's a terrifying act of intellectual destruction, because for a moment, you are left with nothing. You question your parents, you question your culture, and you question the sacred beliefs of your religion. Most people are terrified to do this. They would rather live with the rot than live in the insecure and empty doubt of not knowing. But according to Descartes, a truth that cannot be questioned is no truth at all.
