Less than 6% of physicians in America are Black. Listen to that number again. I think we need to have an honest conversation about what that means for Black patients entering the healthcare system. When patients feel ignored, dismissed, or misunderstood, the consequences can be serious. Dr. Uche Blackstock's message really made me think about the importance of representation in healthcare. I believe representation matters. It matters when we're talking about pain management. It matters in maternity care. And it matters in hospice. But I also think we need to go beyond simply asking how many Black healthcare workers there are. How many Black-owned hospices are actually serving Black communities? Because ownership matters too. Lived experience matters. Understanding the community matters. This isn't just about statistics. It's about trust, dignity, and making sure patients feel heard and recognized as human beings.
